Bespoke and Custom Jewellery FAQ

What is the difference between custom and bespoke?

Custom jewellery usually means personalising an existing design, for example, choosing your stone, metal colour, or finish to make the piece feel like your own.

Bespoke jewellery is a much deeper process: it’s about creating a design entirely from scratch, made uniquely for you.

Whether it’s an engagement ring, wedding band, or another meaningful piece, bespoke design allows us to craft jewellery that reflects your story, your style, and your symbolism.

I have an idea, can you help me create a bespoke piece of jewellery?

I absolutely love working with people on bespoke designed jewellery. I regularly create bespoke engagement rings, wedding bands, re-imagined heirloom pieces, and personalised gifts. and whatever creative idea you may have.

As a designer and maker, it is so rewarding to have someone come to me with an idea, and for us both to work together to create something truly special, and full of meaning.

If you'd like to share your ideas with me, fill out the custom design form or you can contact me here.

I don't know much about jewellery, can I still participate in the design process?

You definitely can, and it's highly encouraged. The bespoke designing process is collaborative, and I'll guide you through every step of the way.

You don’t need to know jewellery terminology; what matters most is how you want your piece to feel and what it represents.

Whether you’re creating a bespoke engagement ring in Hobart, a personalised wedding band, or a symbolic heirloom, your ideas and stories are the starting point.

What reference materials do you need from me to design my bespoke jewellery?

Reference materials can be helpful, but they’re not essential. If you have images, sketches, or even small anecdotes that inspire you, I’d love to see them. Sometimes a single photo or story can spark a whole design.

And if you’re not sure where to begin, you can always browse my Instagram, engagement ring gallery, or archive for inspiration.

Together, we’ll transform even the smallest idea into a meaningful piece, whether it’s an engagement ring, wedding band, or custom gift.

Do you make custom or bespoke engagement and wedding rings?

Yes! Bespoke engagement rings and wedding bands are some of my favourite pieces to create.

These rings are often some of the most important pieces of jewellery you will have in your life. I will help guide you through all of the many considerations, so you end up with the perfect ring that suits your lifestyle and aesthetic.

Each ring is handmade in my Hobart studio, and it’s always an honour to be part of someone’s love story in this way.

How much does an engagement ring cost?

The cost of an engagement ring can vary widely due to the costs of different materials, such as metal and gemstone choice.

Once we have had an initial chat about what is important to you, favourite gems and metal colours etc., I will provide initial quotes that cover a variety of different budgets.

I always work to create the most special and fabulous ring, regardless of your budget.

How long does it take to make custom or bespoke jewellery?

Generally a bespoke piece will be more involved then a custom piece, but we will discuss timelines at the beginning of the project.

Every part of the bespoke process is significant, and it's vital for me to capture the core of your idea. Bespoke jewellery is an involved and narrative process, each piece has its own story to uncover.

Once we’ve finalised the design, I carefully source any specific materials needed, and then begin handcrafting your piece in my Hobart studio. The process is highly considered, and entirely focused on bringing your unique idea to life.

Allow at least 8 to 12 weeks for fully bespoke designs. Any important deadlines that are agreed upon will be met.

What materials are available to create my custom or bespoke jewellery piece?

I work with a wide range of materials and always aim to find the best creative solution for your vision.

Gold and Sterling Silver are my primary metals, but if there’s a specific gemstone or material essential to your design, I’ll do my best to source it ethically and responsibly. On the rare occasion a material isn’t available, we’ll collaborate to find an alternative that you’ll love just as much.

Every piece of bespoke jewellery I create is made with care, using materials chosen for their provenance, beauty, and sustainability.

Do you work with heirloom materials, such as gold and gemstones?

Yes! Using heirloom materials is a wonderful way to carry sentiment and history into a new piece of jewellery. Heirloom gold and gemstones come with many considerations, and I’ll guide you through these in detail during our consultation.

Using heirloom materials is a great way to save on materials costs, but also the sentimental value inherent in materials is something that can't be bought.

Sometimes, it’s a cathartic and empowering process to transform old jewellery into something new. You can even take part in the melting ritual.

Each bespoke piece made from heirloom materials becomes a story, reborn through careful design and mindful creation.

Are your materials responsibly sourced?

Whenever and wherever possible, yes.

The jewellery industry has a complicated history, and I believe it’s essential to know the story behind the materials I use. I take great care to select options that are traceable, ethical, and sustainable. Often, I work with Australian-mined and recycled metals, responsibly sourced gemstones, and heirloom materials that can be reimagined into new pieces. This process can take time and persistence, but it’s an important part of my practice.

For me, creating ethical jewellery in Tasmania means honouring not only the wearer, but also the earth and the people connected to each material.

Can I see my design before it’s made?

Yes! I want you to feel completely confident and excited about your bespoke piece before it comes to life. Once we’ve discussed your ideas, I create sketches, mock ups, and a gemstone viewing session to give you a tangible sense of the design. This ensures the final piece is exactly what you imagined - personal, intentional, and unique to you.

Can I order bespoke jewellery online or remotely?

Absolutely. You don’t need to be local to Lutruwita / Hobart to commission a piece. I guide you through the entire bespoke process via email, video call, and our online form, making it simple to collaborate from anywhere.

Together, we can create jewellery that feels personal and intentional, with every detail thoughtfully considered, all without having to visit the studio in person.

What is the cost of bespoke jewellery?

The cost of bespoke jewellery depends on factors like materials, design complexity, and the time involved in crafting your piece. I work closely with you from the start to explore options that fit your vision and your budget.

Whether you’re choosing precious metals, ethically sourced gemstones, or incorporating heirloom elements, my goal is to create a piece that is meaningful, beautiful, and crafted just for you.

Can you help me redesign or reimagine old or inherited jewellery?

Yes, I love helping people reimagine heirloom and inherited pieces.

Whether it’s a piece with sentimental value, a gemstone you want to give new life, or jewellery that no longer fits your style, we can transform it into something fresh, meaningful, and entirely personal.

I guide you through the process, from understanding the story and history of your materials to designing a piece that honours its past while creating a new narrative. This way, your jewellery continues to be cherished for years to come.
